Sustainable development
Contract mining accounts for almost a third of Australia’s mining activity. As one of the country’s largest mining contractors, Downer EDI Mining has an important role in the sustainability of the resources industry, both in Australia and overseas.
To understand this role and its associated emphases, we have assessed the nature and risk of our diverse business activities, relative to those of other industry stakeholders and against the ten principles of the International Council on Mining and Metals’ Sustainable Development Framework.
We are an active member of the mining industry’s peak representative body, the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA); we are a signatory to the Australian Minerals Industry’s Enduring Value initiative; and we support the Brundtland Commission’s definition of sustainable development as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
We also actively participate in sustainability-related industry committees throughout Australia, including those of the Australian Constructors Association, the Queensland Resources Council, the Chamber of Minerals and Energy Western Australia, the Australian Mines and Metals Association, and the Mining and Industry Skills Council.
Sustainability provides the framework in which our values are translated into goals and targets and, consequently, we are committed to: providing a supportive and rewarding work environment for our people, ensuring employee health, safety and wellbeing, minimising environmental impacts, providing climate change solutions, engaging with local communities and maintaining partnerships with Indigenous stakeholders and organisations.
